Fethiye Surf Center started in 1988-89 when an Austrian family left surfing to our family and then our older brother Şener Aykurt learned windsurfing and taught it to us (Yener, Taner, Bengül Aykurt). Fighting with the wind until we got tired, dancing with the waves was a great pleasure and became a sport that shaped our lives.
Surfing was now an indispensable part of our lives. Thanks to this sport, we started to meet other surfers and even bought supplies from strangers surfing. We started teaching surfing to our friends around us with the materials we had. In those years, we started to run the surfing part of a school that was engaged in motorized water sports, and now the sport we fell madly in love with became our job as well... In the following years, we left the motorized water sports school we worked with and moved to our current place and started to do windy water sports, so we opened our first school. . Over the years, our efforts to improve our school and ourselves continued.
As a result of these efforts, we were able to get International Surf Instructor certificates by participating in the courses and exams organized by VDWS (German Surfing Federation) in Fethiye, and we turned our school into an international school. We went to the warm countries in the south during the winter and started to work in world-renowned schools and thus, we started to explore different countries.
During the conversation we had with a British surfing acquaintance at the end of the 90's, we decided to try kitesurfing together, which started in America. Then, with the help of Peter, our brother Taner started to try the first kitesurfing (kitesurfing) we brought from England. Thus, our first acquaintance with kitesurfing took place.
Thanks to the wind and sea knowledge we gained from the videos we watched and the windsurfing, with the help of me and Peter, and with a little determination, our brother Taner started to record his first meters. But at that time, the audience did not give much hope that this sport could exist. Because very few people practice this sport in the world, perhaps none in Turkey. But my brother Taner did not give up, the joy in his eyes was worth seeing when he went his first 50m, it was like he said "this is my sport". As a matter of fact, we immediately bought the kite material, our first material is Naish 7m with 2 ropes. Fone, which is similar to kite and surf boards, became a one-way board.
Although the first attempts were very successful, it took a summer for Taner to be able to go upwind due to the small size of the kite. The first student that Taner taught when he found out was my elder brother and assistant, Yener Aykurt. After experiencing that the first item we bought was a small kite, we decided that we needed to buy larger items. Meanwhile, we met another kite surfer from Switzerland, Haui. Since there is no interest in this sport in Turkey yet, we started to teach kitesurfing to the Swiss friends Haui brought to Fethiye with the kites we bought from Haui.
And in this way, the Kitesurfing section was opened next to Windsurfing. Many of our friends who wanted to open their schools as instructors came to our school in the following years and received training, and many of them opened schools in different places or are working as instructors. With this aspect, Fethiye Surf Center leads the way in the spread of this sport as the school that trains the most trainers. In the following years, we started to serve different groups and universities by opening catamaran and sailing classes.
Our trainers are among the most experienced trainers of Turkey, who have made degrees in domestic and international competitions with the effect of starting this sport for the first time and in a life spent with water sports.
One of the biggest problems in Turkey is that there is still not enough equipment to do these sports in our country, and we have opened a Surf Shop because we think that these sports are developing more slowly. I seem to hear many of you asking whether it is more fun to windsurf, kitesurf or catamaran… My answer to you is; they all have their place, really. It is incredibly nice to be able to windsurf in very strong winds. If you want to chat with your friends and enjoy the sea and the wind, you should make a catamaran, if you want to fly freely between the wind and the waves, you should kitesurf.
If you don't like a lot of adrenaline, believe me, canoeing or pedalo may be the best for you. If it is too much, you can sip the drinks of the surf cafe on the beach, cool off and watch the surfers like watching a movie, or enjoy surfing the Internet in the beach environment.
We, as Fethiye Surf Center, claim to be one of the best schools in the world, beyond Turkey, in the field of windsurfing and kitesurfing, with years of experience and knowledge, and we welcome you to our schools, where we will share our experiences with pleasure.
